Adiyogi: The First Yogi and the First Guru
In the yogic tradition, Shiva is not perceived as a mythological deity or a belief system. He is revered as Adiyogi (the First Yogi) and the Adi Guru, the First Guru of humanity.
Over fifteen thousand years ago, a being of unearthly presence appeared in the upper reaches of the Himalayas. For long stretches, he sat in absolute stillness, completely oblivious to physical existence. At other times, he danced in wild ecstasy. Seeing that this being lived beyond the dualities of pleasure and pain, birth and death, seven intense seekers gathered around him.
For eighty-four years, these seven disciples engaged in profound, rigorous preparation. When their systems attained complete receptivity, on the full moon night of the month of Ashadha, Adiyogi turned toward the south. That day became celebrated as Guru Purnima, the day the first transmission of yoga occurred on the serene banks of Kanti Sarovar, above Kedarnath.
